Coach Profile: Joseph Riley
Hobbies and Activities Outside of CrossFit training:
I like to spend a lot of time at the gym, but when I am not there I like to hangout with my dog Chance, and my girlfriend Emily. I don’t as much anymore but I have played the violin since I was two and a half so I always love the opportunity to play when I can.
What is your favorite cheat meal?
Why do you love CrossFit?
I love CrossFit because I can continually grow and better myself as an athlete. In high school and my first year in college my experiences were surrounded by athletics and competition. Being able to continue that competitiveness that I have even though I am not on a collegiate athletic team makes staying fit fun and goal oriented.
What are 3 things you love about College Hill CrossFit?
The three things I love about CrossFit are: 1. I am continually growing and getting better. 2. There is always something I could be working on to target a weakness so I’m never bored. 3. The community provides awesome support and training partners so it’s fun and I’m always learning from others.
What is your favorite WOD, movement or both?
My favorite movement(s) is anything with a barbell, specifically snatch and clean and jerk. My favorite type of workouts are fast couplets with a barbell.
Do you have an embarrassing moment that happened during a WOD?
At my first WOD Series challenge hosted at CHC we had a workout involving toes to rings. This was my first time doing this movement and I had no idea how to pace workouts. So on my second round I lost my grip and did a back flop off of the rings.
Favorite CrossFit moment?
I would have to say my favorite Crossfit moment was seeing my mom make top 200 in the masters division and eventually moving up the leader board into the top 100. My mom is my hero and she is only going to continue to give me more “favorite” Crossfit moments.
Most memorable CrossFit moment?
Making the regional team and going to regionals.
Tell us about your family
I have a mother, father, and older sister who are all CrossFitters. My mother placed in the top 200 of the 55-59 masters division during the Open which is something I am very proud of. CrossFit has become a part of my families life and is something we can all do together. We are a little crazy but It happens…. 🙂
Favorite piece of CrossFit gear?
Any Lululemon clothing. It’s the most comfortable to WOD in.
What is your Pre-WOD Routine?
I stretch and mobilize. Then I do some kind of cardio work for 30 minutes.
What is something about coaching that you love?
I love when you can see somebody your coaching finally make the connection with any movement they are working on. Some of my favorite moments are when a member comes up to me and tells me they never thought they would be able to perform a movement that I helped them learn! Never let the mind limit the body.
What advice do you have for someone who is new?
I love being able to see clients progress and get better. Many clients are hesitant when they begin and growing their confidence in their fitness level is very rewarding. For someone new my advice would be to learn as much as you can and never be afraid to ask questions and master technique before weight.
